There is no respectable waiting period, whatever friends, relatives or strangers on the internet may suggest. Some people want companionship within months. Others take years. Many feel ready one week and decidedly not ready the next.
A better question is this: can you meet a new person as themselves, rather than as an audition to fill an empty place? You do not need to be finished grieving. Grief rarely finishes neatly. But it helps if you can tolerate the uncertainty of dating without expecting another person to repair your life.
Signs that you may be ready include:
- You feel curious about someone new, not only frightened of being alone.
- You can talk about your late partner without every conversation becoming a comparison.
- You are able to say what you want, whether that is friendship, occasional dates or a committed relationship.
- You can cope with a polite rejection without seeing it as a judgement on your past.
Guilt is common. Enjoying an evening with someone does not reduce what your marriage or partnership meant. One relationship is not overwritten by another, just as adding a new chapter does not tear out the earlier ones.
Ready does not mean completely healed. It means able to be honest with yourself and fair to the person you meet.
